Understanding your child’s developmental milestones

Speech & Language Milestones:

  • 0-3 Months: Coos, makes gurgling sounds, begins to smile at people.
  • 4-6 Months: Babbles, laughs, makes sounds when spoken to.
  • 7-12 Months: Responds to their name, says simple words like “mama” or “dada.”
  • Turns head toward sounds

Occupational Therapy Milestones:

  • 0-3 Months: Holds head up while on tummy, opens and closes fists.
  • 4-6 Months: Reaches for and grasps toys, begins to sit with support.
  • 7-12 Months: Stands while holding on, plays peek-a-boo, moves objects from one hand to the other.

Signs Your Child May Need Therapy:

  • Limited or absent babbling.
  • Difficulty making eye contact or responding to sounds.
  • Delays in reaching for or grasping objects.

Speech & Language Milestones:

  • 12-18 Months: Uses simple words, follows simple directions.
  • 19-24 Months: Combines words, points to body parts when asked.
  • 25-36 Months: Speaks in sentences, uses pronouns like “I” and “you.”

Occupational Therapy Milestones:

  • 12-18 Months: Walks independently, stacks blocks, scribbles with crayons.
  • 19-24 Months: Runs, kicks a ball, feeds themselves with a spoon.
  • 25-36 Months: Walks up and down stairs, dresses themselves with help, builds towers with blocks.

Signs Your Child May Need Therapy:

  • Difficulty following simple directions.
  • Limited vocabulary or difficulty combining words.
  • Delays in walking, running, or other motor skills.

  • 3-4 Years: Uses sentences with 4-5 words, tells simple stories.
  • 4-5 Years: Speaks clearly, uses past tense, asks questions.

Occupational Therapy Milestones:

  • 3-4 Years: Draws basic shapes, uses scissors, dresses themselves independently.
  • 4-5 Years: Draws a person with a head, body, and limbs, hops on one foot, catches a ball.

  • Difficulty speaking clearly or being understood by others.
  • Struggles with fine motor skills like holding a pencil or using scissors.
  • Delays in social skills or difficulty interacting with peers.

  • 6-7 Years: Writes legibly, uses a computer keyboard, ties shoes.
  • 7-8 Years: Completes multi-step tasks, plays sports, uses tools like scissors and rulers.

  • Difficulty expressing themselves clearly or organizing their thoughts.
  • Struggles with handwriting, typing, or other fine motor skills.
  • Delays in reading, writing, or other academic skills.
